Chocolate Brownie Crackle Cookies

The holiday season has a special place in my heart. It’s a time for spreading joy, warmth, and of course, indulging in delightful treats. Every year I pick a cookie, bake it, and enjoy it… ahem, several times a day leading up to Christmas. When there are cookies in the house, I lose all self-control.

Whipping up batches of homemade goodies to share with loved ones will always be one of my favourite holiday traditions. There’s something truly special about giving a gift that you’ve poured your heart into, especially when it comes in the form of these irresistible Chocolate Brownie Crackle Cookies.

THESE cookies are worth every sneaky trip to the snack cupboard! And I say “sneaky” because I have a 4-year-old, and the second she even catches me moving my mouth in a motion that seems like chewing, I get berated with demands to immediately tell her what’s in my mouth. If you have kids you know exactly what I mean.

What Makes These Cookies the Best for Holiday Giving?

These Chocolate Brownie Crackle Cookies are one of my all-time favourites to gift. They’re the epitome of holiday giving. The rich, bittersweet chocolate melds harmoniously with the velvety butter, creating a symphony of flavour that’s both comforting and indulgent. The addition of self-rising flour and a touch of baking soda brings about that distinctive crackle effect on the cookies’ surface, giving them a playful and inviting appearance.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Bittersweet Chocolate: This isn’t just any chocolate. It’s the key ingredient that brings depth and intensity to each bite.
  • Unsalted Butter: The unsung hero, ensuring the cookies are perfectly moist and decadent.
  • Egg & Vanilla: The dynamic duo that adds richness and complexity to the flavour profile.
  • Light Brown Sugar: Infusing a subtle caramel note, making every bite feel like a warm hug.
  • Self-Rising Flour & Baking Soda: The secret to that crackle effect – creating a delicate, crispy shell while keeping the inside irresistibly gooey.
  • Icing Sugar: A dusting of icing sugar for that final touch of sweetness.

Important! Use Bittersweet Chocolate

The bittersweet chocolate is the soul of these cookies, infusing them with a deep, complex flavour that sets them apart. It’s what makes each bite a moment of pure delight.

Self Rising Flour is a Must!

And the self-rising flour? It’s the magic wand that ensures the cookies rise to perfection, creating that delightful crackling effect on the surface.

Holiday Gift-Giving Tips

These Chocolate Brownie Crackle Cookies aren’t just meant for you to hoard (although I wouldn’t blame you if you did). They make for the perfect holiday gift. Package them in a charming tin, tie them up with a festive bow, and you’ve got a present that’s sure to bring smiles and warmth to your loved ones. The best part? Description

These chocolate cookies crackle and spread as they bake – making for an eyecatching cookie! The coating of icing sugar dresses them up, making them look more dramatic.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, cut into cubes, at room temp.
  • 1 egg
  • 3 drops vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cups + 2 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp self-rising flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp icing sugar (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Melt the chopped chocolate in a double boiler, stirring frequently.
  3. Remove bowl from heat. Gradually stir in butter. Set aside.
  4. In a medium bowl, beat together the egg and vanilla until frothy. Gradually beat in sugar. Slowly pour in melted chocolate and beat until just combined.
  5. Stir in the flour and baking soda to make a firm dough. If too sticky to handle, refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  6. Using your hands, roll the dough into walnut-sized balls. Roll each of the balls in icing sugar and place 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Use more than one tray or bake in batches as needed. These cookies do spread as they bake, so leave lots of room in between.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes just until firm. Allow cookies to cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack to cool.
  8. Enjoy with an extra sprinkle of icing sugar and a glass of milk!

Can these Cookies Be Frozen?

Absolutely! If you’re planning ahead or want to savour the joy of these cookies beyond the holiday season, they freeze beautifully. Just ensure they’re well wrapped in an airtight container, and they’ll be ready to bring joy whenever you need a sweet pick-me-up.
