How to Throw A Canada Day Party: Decorate Your Space

This is a sponsored post written by me in partnership with Home Depot Canada. All opinions and experiences are 100% my own.

Getting the backyard ready to host a Canada Day Party can be a big undertaking! Whether you are stripping and staining a deck, or simply mowing the lawn, there’s always a to-do list that must be complete before the guests arrive.

“J” and I have spent the past four summers whipping our once barren backyard into shape. So this year we really wanted to make the most of it by hosting a fun Canada Day 150th Party with family and friends!

It’s not very often Canadians show their patriotic side, but with Canada’s 150th quickly approaching, I can see many Canadians wanting to proudly display their red and whites! I am so proud to be Canadian. I am lucky enough to live in a country that is welcoming, kind, and above all, diverse; and that should absolutely be celebrated!

Decorating your space for a stellar Canada Day Party doesn’t have to be hard or time-consuming. I like to turn on music, sip on a sangria and leisurely pull my décor together; after all, it’s supposed to be an enjoyable and stress-free experience!

You want to create a space that is welcoming and comfortable for your guests! Gone are the days where I text my guests “make sure to bring chairs, a cooler with drinks, food… oh and a blanket” before they arrive! (look at me, being an adult!!).

My main priority when decorating for my Canada Day Party was seating. I wanted my guests to feel like there were plenty of seating options, whether it be on the patio, deck or grass. Two seasons ago, “J” and I invested in two beautiful Brown Jordan loveseats from Home Depot Canada, and they continue to be our best backyard purchase! The upholstery has held up beautifully and the resin weave shows no signs of drying or cracking! Not to mention they are soooo comfortable!

To complement the loveseats and offer some additional single seating, Home Depot Canada provided me with two wicker woven occasional chairs and matching side table by Hampton Bay. If there is one piece of furniture that is often overlooked in a backyard setting it’s side tables!! Having a place to set my drink, camera, or whatever else I might be holding is a much-appreciated option! Other unconventional seating options are also great to have on hand, like this simple knit-inspired outdoor pouf! Guests can take a seat or put their feet up.

Depending on the layout of your backyard, you’ll want to ensure there are several places for your guests to sit in the shade. Two summers ago, “J” and I built our beautiful patio cover creating a much-needed shaded area to our backyard. Without it, guests would literally roast in the sun for 6 hours! If you don’t want guests to leave with a sunburn, set up a gazebo or large patio umbrella for your friends to relax under!

Of course, we can’t forget about the Canadian paraphernalia! I tend to error on the side of “less is more” when it comes to party decorations. So rather than bombard my guests with red-and-white-everything, I opted for more Canadiana décor. Simple flags, banners and celebratory candles set the stage for the festivities and afternoon fun! I even threw in some cute canoe paddle throw pillows for a pop of cuteness!

And let’s not forget about lighting! If you plan on entertaining your guests through the evening some well placed lighting can help set the mood! One of the season’s biggest trends is string lights (not just for Christmas décor anymore!!). Hampton Bay has several options to choose from including retro caged lights, Edison bulb lights or simple café lights. We opted for the latter! They add a beautiful glow over the patio when dusk falls, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for our sitting area!

And finally… consider a centerpiece! There is nothing I love more than sitting around a fire on a cool summer night. But alas, our municipality doesn’t allow for fire pits in backyards. So when I came across this beautiful faux concrete fire table at Home Depot Canada I knew it was the centerpiece my backyard needed! Since it runs on propane it’s easy to control the size of the flame, which is ideal since we placed it underneath our wooden patio cover. Whether it serves as a table during the day or a fire pit during the night, this large centerpiece was a great addition to my outdoor living space!

Whether you are hosting a Canada Day Party, big or small, creating an atmosphere where your guests feel relaxed and welcomed is the key!

Stay tuned for my next post in this series where I’ll share my favourite BBQ friendly Canada Day menu!
