New Year, New Kitchen! My Full Kitchen Reveal
When it comes to home projects, sometimes it’s easier to look the other way than head down the rabbit hole. For 4+ years I looked the other way when it came to our kitchen.
My desire for a backsplash meant we’d have to redo the countertops… and if we were going to upgrade the countertops we’d might as well get a new sink… And what about new storage solutions? And lighting? And flooring, would it stay or go? And DOWN the rabbit hole you go!
But after 4+ years of looking the other way, “J” and I decided it was time to take the leap! In October, we started tossing around the idea of increasing the functionality of the kitchen while upgrading the look and feel to something that was a bit more… us. We decided a kitchen makeover was something we could tackle vs a full blown “gut-everything-and-the-kitchen-sink” type reno.
While we loved the dark cabinetry, the doors were starting to show signs of wear and tear, and we longed for something a bit more modern. The laminate countertops really dated the kitchen and didn’t exactly scream “gourmet.” And the lack of cabinet space… let’s just say at times I was afraid to open cupboards in fear of what might fall out onto my head. Not to mention… no backsplash!
Working with the kitchen experts at Home Depot Canada, and their Renuit service, allowed us to create the kitchen of our dreams! They installed our new custom cabinet doors, quartz countertop and silgranit sink from Blanco Canada. They were even up for the challenge of building two new pantry cupboards and a desk!
Our course a kitchen makeover wouldn’t be complete without a DIY or two! “J” and I took it upon ourselves to tile the backsplash and build two industrial pipe shelves – both projects turned out beautifully!
In the end, I’m thrilled to see my original design concept come to life! The “heart of my home” is officially ready to welcome friends & family!

Hi. I really like what you have done with your kitchen. Would you post some pictures of how your stove is set up. I notice it is in the corner which i think is interesting but what do you have on the other side of it?
Hi Kim, thank you for your kind words. The layout of the kitchen was something we didn’t change when we started the makeover. When we moved into the house I thought the placement of the stove was interesting and something I never would have picked if I had the opportunity to design the kitchen from scratch. That said, after 4+ years of cooking in the kitchen I do like its placement. On the left of the stove is more countertop space and the fridge. On the right is the sink. You can see a more wide-angle view of the kitchen in this photo (taken before the makeover): http://bit.ly/2ktPXTg
Let me know if you have any other questions! 🙂
Your kitchen is beautiful! Can you post a photo of where your fridge is please? My stove also sits on an angle, and I would like to see how you set up the other side of the stove. Thanks.
Hi Diane, thank you so much for stopping by and your nice words about my kitchen project! I’ve updated the post with a photo of the full kitchen (including the fridge). If you want to see it closer up click here: http://bit.ly/2jRIs7S
Hope this helps! 🙂
What colour is your grout in the backsplash?
Hi Cait, we used Non-Sanded PolyBlend grout in “Winter Gray”: http://bit.ly/2sQqEPP. Hope that helps! 🙂
